Beginners and Family Guide to Golf in Frisco
Share:
In Frisco, we want everyone to feel welcome to enjoy the great game of golf. Whether you try to make it onto the course regularly or are just curious and want to take a swing at the sport for the first time, Frisco has experiences that golfers of all ages and all skill levels can enjoy.
In The City That Plays, golf goes beyond the green — it’s about the unforgettable experiences of dining together after a round, the excitement of planning a golf trip, and the memories that come with spending quality time together. There’s no better time than now to learn the basics of golf or try the game out with your family in Sports City USA. With PGA of America setting up its headquarters here recently, there’s plenty of expertise here to get you into the sport or elevate your existing skills!
Discover Ronny Golf Park, Just for Kids
One of the coolest and most family-friendly parts of PGA Frisco is the Ronny Golf Park. There are dedicated junior golf programs for children ages 3-14 at this two-acre park that’s lighted and made entirely of synthetic turf. Young golfers can play here, rain or shine, night or day. It has two putting greens that are smaller replicas of the nearby 18th holes of the East and West Course of PGA Frisco, two chipping greens, an 18-hole putting course, a playground, and an obstacle course. One great perk of the park? It's open and free to the public when it’s not in use for programs. So, if you have a little one looking to learn golf, this is a great place for golf fundamentals, fun, and friendships.
Book Lessons With a Professional
Of course, you can always go to a driving range and have a friend or family member show you the basics, but we recommend booking lessons with an instructor who knows the game inside out. Frisco makes it easy to customize your approach to learning golf.
The best way to learn the fundamentals of golf is through lessons with a pro. One place to start is at the PGA Coaching Center at PGA Frisco. Here, certified PGA instructors work with golfers of all ages and skill levels using the latest golf technology. The center offers a “Try Golf Clinic” for adults on Saturday mornings, a program for those new to the sport with all gear provided so you can quickly get into the swing of things. There are also beginner programs for all ages and much more at this state-of-the-art facility.
The Trails of Frisco Golf Club is an 18-hole golf course with a 6,800-yard, par 71 layout featuring dramatic bunkering, scenic wetlands, and champion greens. It also offers instruction from head golf professional and lead instructor David Kim. This certified instructor has more than 25 years of experience in the golf industry. The golf club is also the home of the Travis Lynch Golf Academy. Lynch was named a U.S. Kids Top 50 Coach for 2018 and 2019. He runs junior, adult, and ladies programs, 30 or 60-minute lessons, and summer camps.
Fun Ways to Fine-Tune Your Swing
We embrace the golf lifestyle in Frisco and offer plenty of ways to improve your game, socialize, or both at the same time. As you may have guessed, Omni PGA Frisco Resort is a great place to enjoy great food, great company, and great golf.
While you’re here, be sure to find The Swing, a 10-hole par 3 course with lights so you can play even at night. Each hole is only 45 to 100 yards, offering interesting green complexes with dramatic swales. Once you’re done, hop over to the Ice House next to the course for a delicious menu full of Texas flavors. The golf doesn’t have to stop with a bite to eat and a refreshing beverage though. The back of the restaurant features six live hitting bays with Toptracer technology and views of the fairways of PGA Frisco. Whether you’re new to the sport or live and breathe golf, this place will whet your appetite.
Also near the Ice House is the Dance Floor, a two-acre putting course — one of the largest natural-grass putting courses in the entire country. It was co-designed by Gil Hanse and Beau Welling and is a great place to practice the putting portion of your short game. Play under the sun in the day or the spotlights at night.
For a day of practicing your swing in an indoor setting, we recommend checking out the Topgolf Swing Suite at Westin Stonebriar. This suite is available for rentals, so you can practice your swing with a group of friends or simply hang out while playing golf on the simulator. There are clubs for men, women, and children at the suite, both left and right-handed. If you work up an appetite, food and drink are available from the locally-inspired Beans & Barrel in the hotel.
Another new player on the Frisco golf scene is The Local Open, which features golf simulators as well as a kitchen and bar that’s open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and brunch. The golf simulators use TrackMan technology to help you perfect your game as you play on a selection of more than 200 courses. For beginners, there are fun golf games available, including Capture the Flag and Closest to the Pin. If you have no appetite for golf but are hungry, there's a dining area so you can enjoy the seasonal and locally sourced menu away from the action.
